Scope and Contents

Approximately 7.5 cubic ft., 1782-1973. Contains materials relating to the treatment of cancer, to the history of Memorial Hospital, and to certain individuals associated with it. This includes biographical information on James Ewing, James Douglas, and J. Marion Sim; material on Mme. Marie Curie's visits to the U. S. in the 1920s; and files on cancer therapies and quackery. Also includes notes, drafts, and other materials relating to both editions of Martin's Surgery of Head and Neck Tumors, as well as meeting minutes, staff information, art and illustrations, and photographs of notable individuals, staff, buildings, and equipment at Memorial.

Biographical / Historical

Hayes Martin was born on June 24, 1892 and served as a medical officer in the U.S. Navy during World War I. After the war, Martin interned at Memorial Hospital in the summer of 1922 and stayed on as a resident until 1923, returning two years later as clinical assistant surgeon. He researched and wrote extensively on cancer and surgery of the head and neck and in 1934 was appointed Chief of the Head and Neck Service at Memorial Hospital. Martin died in 1977.
