Ewing, James, 1866-1943

Scope Note: 1866-1943. Pathologist James Stephen Ewing studied medicine at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of New York and later became the first Professor of pathology at Cornell University. In 1907, Ewing helped found the American Association for Cancer Research, and in 1913, the American Society for the Control of Cancer, which later became the American Cancer Society. Ewing’s relationship with Memorial began when he collaborated with James Douglas to fund and develop clinical research at Memorial, particularly in radiation therapy. In 1931, Ewing was appointed president of the hospital, where he worked at until his retirement in 1939.
