Scope Note: 1867-1934. Maria Salomea Skłodowska-Curie was a Polish-French physicist and chemist. She was the first woman to win a Nobel Prize, and the first person to win a Nobel Prize twice and in two scientific fields. Skłodowska-Curie conducted pioneering research on radioactivity and discovered the elements of polonium and radium. Curie visited Memorial Hospital in 1921 while on a tour of the US.
