Scope Note: 1813-1883. James Marion Sims was a surgeon known for the development of surgical techniques, the Sims speculum, the Sims sigmoid catheter, and the Sims position. In the development of his surgical techniques, Sims implemented racist beliefs and unethical practices, experimenting without anesthesia on enslaved Black women and girls who could not consent, as well as enslaved infants and men. In 1855 Sims founded the Woman's Hospital in New York and in 1876 he was elected President of the American Medical Association.
