Dargeon, Harold William, 1897-1970

Scope Note: Doctor Harold Dargeon, born in New York City on May 7, 1987, was a distinguished pediatrician and authority on juvenile cancer. He headed the Department of Pediatrics at Memorial Hospital, becoming its chief in 1935. After graduating from Fordham University in 1919, Dargeon pursued his career in medicine, receiving his degree from Albany Medical in 1922. He helped establish the first pediatric cancer ward in the country at Memorial Hospital for Cancer and Allied Health, appointed to the attending staff in 1933. His tenure spanned several decades between the 1930s and 1960s.

He became Clinical Professor of Pediatrics (Emeritus) at Cornell University Medical College in July of 1963 after holding several other teaching and research appointments in the years prior. Dargeon also served as President of the Bellevue Hospital Alumni Association in 1949 as well as retained memberships in multiple medical and scientific societies such as the New York Academy of Medicine, The American Society of Pediatrics, New York Cancer Society, among others.

Dargeon pioneered the pursuit to obtain recognition of the issues surrounding the practices of managing and classifying neoplastic diseases in children. He released over 60 publications including three books. In recognition of his scientific achievements and contributions, he was awarded the Janeway Medal in June 1964. He was the recipient of several other awards including the James Ewing medial in 1968 and the Alumni Award of Albany Medical College in 1969.

Harold Dargeon is also known for his military involvement, serving in both World Wars and participating several other invasions; he retired as Captain, Medical Corps, US Naval Reserve with 6 Bronze Stars.

He died on October 29, 1970 of carcinoma of the prostate.
