Scope Note: Doctor Henry David Diamond, born December 25, 1918 in New York City, devoted much of his career to the study and treatment of Hodgkin’s disease which would later claim his life on April 18, 1962. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts and later, in 1944, his medical degree from the University of Louisville. Diamond started at Memorial Hospital in 1946, after medical discharge from his position in the United States Naval Reserve. He was first appointed as Clinical Assistant in Medicine on July 1, 1946 and then promoted to succeed his own physician as Chief of the Lymphoma Service and Attending Physician in the Department of Medicine. In recognition of his research abilities, Diamond was also promoted to the rank of Associate Member and Section Head in the Sloan-Kettering Institute. Before assuming his role of Chief, he headed the recruitment and training of members of the Special Fellowships in the Lymphoma Service. While under his supervision, they produced 15 important contributions to the knowledge of malignant lymphomas and leukemias. He authored an estimate of 70 publications including a book entitled The Medical Management of Cancer, with forward written by Dr Lloyd F. Craver.
