Biographical / Historical
The James Ewing Society was founded in 1940 as an alumni association for Memorial-trained physicians. In 1975, the Society changed its name to the Society of Surgical Oncology (SSO) and broadened its membership eligibility to include non-Memorial trained physicians. This was followed by further expansion of programs and development of new committees, with representatives appointed to the Board of Governors of the American College of Surgeons, the National Cancer Advisory Board, and the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons. The SSO has held joint meetings with the Society of Head and Neck Surgeons as well as the British Association of Surgical Oncology and the British Society of Head and Neck Surgeons.
