Biographical / Historical
Memorial Hospital was founded in 1884 as New York Cancer Hospital. In 1899, the name was changed to General Memorial Hospital for the Treatment of Cancer and Allied Diseases. “General” was later dropped from the name when the Board of Managers accepted a proposal from James Ewing and James Douglas to provide financial support under the condition that MH return to its original mission of the care and treatment of patients with cancer specifically. In 1960, MH and SKI were incorporated under the entity of MSK before their unification into a single institution in 1980.
