Scope Note: Doctor Konrad Dobriner, born in Elberfield on October 14, 1902, was a pioneer of research in biochemistry. He graduated from the University of Frieburg in 1925 and then received his medical degrees from the University of Munich. He found his first position after emigrating to the US in 1933 as a research fellow in the University of Rochester Medical School from 1934 o 1936 and then at the hospital of Rockefeller Institute for a duration of 3 years. He began working at Memorial Hospital in 1939 when he was appointed head of the Department of Research Chemistry. He later became a member of the Sloan-Kettering Institute in 1947, earning the additional title of Associate Professor of Medicine in the Cornell University Medical School three years later.
Dobriner’s career focused on the biochemistry of cancer and related fields. His earlier interests involved the field of porphyrin excretion and later topics including the metabolism of specific carcinogens such as 1:2:5:6-dibenzanthracene, dimethylaminoazobenzene, and the carcinogenicity of benzidine. In his later years, he became known for his contributions to the establishment of patterns of urinary excretion of the steroid hormones in normal pathological states, infra-red spectroscopy, and the impact of steroids on the growth of experimental tumors, among others. He died on March 10, 1952.
