Scope Note: 1892-1977. Hayes Martin was born on June 24, 1892 and served as a medical officer in the U.S. Navy during World War I. After the war, Martin interned at Memorial Hospital in the summer of 1922 and stayed on as a resident until 1923, returning two years later as clinical assistant surgeon. He researched and wrote extensively on cancer and surgery of the head and neck and in 1934 was appointed Chief of the Head and Neck Service at Memorial Hospital.
