Scope Note: Nathan Cummings, born on October 14, 1986, in St. John, New Brunswick, was an entrepreneur and philanthropist. His family emigrated from Lithuania to Montreal, where he worked for his father until he moved to New York for trade school. Despite having little formal education, he became a very successful businessman. He acquired a Baltimore tea and coffee wholesaler in 1939 which led to him founding the Consolidated Food Corporation, some of his other well-known brands include the Kitchens of Sara Lee Bakery, Fuller Brush, and Haines Hosiery.
He donated substantial sums to the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Hospital, New York Hospital, and Mount Sinai Medical Center, as well as other hospitals, with the hope that the research that resulted from his donations would lead to medical advances in the treatment of cancer. In June of 1984, the Nathan Cummings Life Science Center was opened at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. He died on February 19, 1985, in West Palm Beach, Florida.

4.3 cubic feet. Correspondence, reprints, speeches, meeting files, subject files, films, videotapes regarding cryosurgery, mediatinoscopy, tobacco studies, and instrument brochures. Contains information relating to the cryosurgical techniques pioneered in the mid 1960s by William G. Cahan. Publicity surrounding Dr. Cahan's surgical procedures led to his receiving numerous letters containing pleas for assistance from people afflicted with various ailments.
