Biographical / Historical

Strang was founded in 1933 by Dr. Elise Strang L’Esperance as the Kate Depew Strang Clinic at the New York Infirmary on 15th Street and funded by New York Central Railroad magnate and US senator Chauncey Depew. In 1940, the Clinic introduced the Pap test as a tool for detecting cervical cancer. In 1945, L’Esperance established a Strang Prevention Clinic at Memorial Hospital, for which a new building was inaugurated in 1947. The first clinical cytology lab, established at the Strang Clinic, would become the Cytology Service of the Department of Pathology. The Strang Cancer Prevention Institute is known as the oldest continually operating cancer prevention institution in the world.
